People tend to see what they want to see, hear what they want to hear and believe what they want to believe. Psychologists call this tendency “ confirmation bias.” The problem is that people, if they are unaware of this bias, tend to stop gathering information once the evidence confirms views they like or they only pick out those bits of data that make them feel good because it confirms their prejudices. Most of us are able to discern between what we want and reality. It’s safe to say that everyone is affected by personal biases but is it possible that the core Trump supporters are dangerously limited by theirs? The refusal by many to see the real Trump is as disturbing as Trump’s behavior. Information appears on the Internet that Barack Obama was not born in the U.S. and the Trump core absolutely believes it. Trump claims that bragging about sexually assaulting women is just locker room talk so that fits the core bias and becomes believable. Confirmation bias not only keeps people from behaving objectively, it appears to fuel the hate that is so pervasive now in our political arenas. Believing everything negative and nothing positive about a person will tend to do that. I believe that Obama was one of the better presidents in the last few decades. To me he is dignified, courageous, a powerful speaker and really cares about the common people in this country. Is that only because it’s what I want to believe? registerguard.com/rg/opinion/35974560-78/confirmation-bias-skews-truth.html.csp
