Letter: Leader’s confabulation would make a great novel

In psychiatry, "confabulation" is a disturbance of memory, defined as the production of fabricated, distorted or misinterpreted memories about oneself or the world, without the conscious intention to deceive. Individuals who confabulate present incorrect memories ranging from "subtle alterations to bizarre fabrications," and are generally very confident about their recollections, despite contradictory evidence.
If the definition of "confabulation" seems accurate, is there a reason to be concerned if a person who confabulates is placed in the position of speaking, acting and making decisions for others? Who or what in America does the best job of representing clear memories and visual and auditory cues that can be shaped into honest information for Americans?
Imagine a leader who creates unique memories because he is incapable of retaining accurate information due to memory deficit. A leader who speaks in generalities because he does not trust his recall on specific events and information and believes his interpretations are real. A leader who becomes defensive and abusive when his views are challenged because he is holding on to what he believes is truth in the face of clear information to the contrary.
Wow! That would make a great novel — not a great chapter of American history.
At some point compassion must replace tolerance.
