Several years ago, while still hosting the Colbert Report (pronounced kohl-bear ree-pore), Stephen Colbert coined the word, "truthiness" in response to the phenomenon known as confirmation bias. Confirmation bias is the tendency of people to be responsive to that information that supports, or confirms, what we already believe. Confirmation bias happens frequently in areas such as politics, religion, and finance.
Essentially, confirmation bias is the force behind tribes and tribalism. We tend to listen to and believe people and publications that "feel" true to us. Often times it is a self-fulfilling process. For example, we have seen instances where someone of influence will float an idea, another person of influence picks up on it and repeats it, other people begin repeating it until it gets back to the person who originally says it, and they use it to reinforce and expand upon the original thought. This happens all the time, and is, in fact, getting worse as our media outlets become more centralized and focused. It is now possible to choose dozens of places to get our beliefs confirmed without ever experiencing a competing or contradictory argument, basically guaranteeing the ascension of ignorance over truth.
