Local restaurant facing backlash for permanently closing on Christmas without telling employees
A former Ruby Tuesday owner is facing backlash from their employees after they closed up shop without telling anyone. KPVI asked Shane Engle, ”The owner's in there. Have they said anything or what?" He said, "No she's in there. She's hiding out in the back because she knows she did wrong."
The Ruby Tuesday in Pocatello is permanently closed and former employees of the restaurants are not happy. Why? Because they found out the same time everyone else did, on Christmas Day.
KPVI has learned that more than 20 people including managers are out of a job, and a lot of them went to pick up their last check on Tuesday. Back in August Ruby Tuesday the corporate franchise closed 95 underperforming restaurants across the country. The one in Pocatello is privately owned, but they’re still closed in their doors anyway.
Twenty-eight people who worked at the privately owned Ruby Tuesday no longer have a job. Engle was a Cook, Serve and Host at the Ruby Tuesday. He says, "It's pretty upsetting knowing that we just had Christmas and spent a bunch of money on our families."
The signs on the front doors of the business read, “Business permanently closed. Watch for new restaurant opening soon.” Deanna Orth used to be a Host. She’s worked at the restaurant since April. She says, "I think it's crappy that we found out that way. That somebody couldn't have called us or let us know in advance so we can find another job. Something!"
Outraged that they weren’t given any warning, Orth is now panicking. She tells KPVI, "I'm on a plan that I need to work to get my Medicaid insurance. And if I don't have a job I lose my insurance. I have several health problems that I have to have insurance."
It’s the only Ruby Tuesday in the state, and employees tell KPVI the restaurant was running a promotion sale to customers. For every $50 gift card bought they got a free one for $15. "I don't know where the next Ruby Tuesday even is and how they're going to get their money back,” Orth said.
KPVI news reporter Magdala Louissaint went inside to see if she can speak to management. She spoke with the general manager who told her the owner is there on the property. She asked him if she'd [owner] like to do an interview with channel 6. But she declined, saying that she'll release a statement later on."
As for the unhappy employees they have this message for the owners. Orth says, “How unfair of you to do this to people? You may be financially stable in your lives but a lot of us live from paycheck to paycheck."
Managers tell KPVI right now there’s no concrete plan on what’s to come for the building except that they owners are looking to sell it. We have yet to hear from the owners, and still waiting for the release they would send us. Once we get it we’ll attach it to this story.
